About Downtown San Diego

LocalCleanup hosts free monthly community cleanup events in Downtown San Diego, San Diego every 3rd Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. No experience needed and all supplies are provided.

Downtown San Diego is the urban core of the city, encompassing the business district, convention center, waterfront, and transit hub for the entire metropolitan area. The neighborhood sees some of the highest foot traffic in the region from commuters, tourists, convention visitors, and residents of its growing number of high-rise apartments. This concentrated activity generates persistent litter along sidewalks, transit stops, and public plazas. Downtown's proximity to the harbor means that street litter can reach San Diego Bay through storm drains, making cleanup efforts here important for both urban quality of life and waterfront health. Downtown cleanup efforts are especially visible and impactful, improving conditions for the thousands of people who pass through these streets every day.

Key landmarks near cleanup areas: Petco Park, Convention Center, Broadway, Embarcadero, Horton Plaza Park.

What litter is most common Downtown?
Downtown litter includes fast-food packaging, coffee cups, cigarette butts, flyers, and plastic bags. Transit stops and areas near food vendors see the highest litter concentrations.
