Why Community Cleanups Matter

Environmental Protection

San Diego County storm drains carry an estimated 30 million pounds of trash to the ocean each year. By removing litter from streets and public spaces, cleanup volunteers intercept waste before it reaches waterways and harms marine ecosystems. According to Ocean Conservancy, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and plastic bottles are the most commonly collected items at cleanup events worldwide.

Community Impact

Research from Keep America Beautiful shows that community cleanup events can reduce neighborhood litter by up to 60% within one year of regular participation. Beyond the immediate visible improvement, cleanups build community pride and change behavior patterns. Neighbors who see others caring for their streets are more likely to do the same.

Personal Benefits

According to BMC Public Health, nature-based volunteering is associated with a 40% reduction in perceived stress. The Journal of Happiness Studies found that regular volunteers report 27% higher odds of finding employment and experience measurably lower stress levels. Cleanup volunteering provides fresh air, gentle exercise, and meaningful social connection.
